What is SLIT?

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is a type of allergy treatment that involves placing allergen-containing drops or dissolvable tablets under your tongue to help build tolerance to specific allergens. It’s an alternative to allergy shots (SCIT) and is often used for environmental allergies, such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander.

SLIT gradually trains your immune system to respond less aggressively to allergens, reducing symptoms over time.

How does SLIT work?

SLIT works by introducing small, controlled doses of allergens under your tongue. The allergens are absorbed through the lining of your mouth, where they come into contact with your immune system. Over time, this repeated exposure helps your body get used to the allergens, reducing allergic reactions and providing long-term relief from symptoms.

The treatment follows a structured process:

  1. Starting phase – small doses taken daily to introduce the allergen to your body
  2. Build-up phase – a gradual dose increase to strengthen your immune system’s tolerance
  3. Maintenance phase – a consistent dose taken regularly for an extended period (typically 3-5 years)

You take SLIT at home after Dr. Mayer administers an initial dose, monitoring you for any reactions.

Can SLIT treat all allergies?

SLIT is most often used to treat allergies to airborne allergens, such as:

  • Grass, tree, and weed pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander (cats and dogs)
  • Mold spores (in some cases)

However, SLIT isn’t currently approved for treating food allergies or insect sting allergies. If you have multiple allergies, Dr. Mayer can determine if SLIT is suitable based on your specific triggers.

Is SLIT an ongoing treatment?

Yes, SLIT is a long-term treatment that typically lasts 3-5 years for maximum effectiveness. You may notice symptom improvement within a few months, but full benefits develop over time. You must stick to the daily regimen for the therapy to work.

Once you complete treatment, you should experience lasting allergy relief, though you may need maintenance therapy if symptoms return.
